Maine Educators, including the Maine Education Association (MEA), Maine School Boards Association (MSBA), Maine School Superintendents Association (MSSA), Maine Principals’ Association (MPA), Maine Curriculum Leaders Association (MCLA), and Maine Administrators of Services for Children with Disabilities (MADSEC), recognize the serious impact that the disruption in Federal Nutritional Programs will have on our students and their families, especially those already facing food insecurity.
No Maine child should ever go hungry. Research consistently shows that food insecurity affects nearly every aspect of a child’s physical and mental well-being. As Educators we believe our state must do everything possible to ensure every child is well-fed and ready to learn.
We are thankful that Maine has already invested in programs such as School Meals for All and are encouraged to hear that school meal programs will not be disrupted, ensuring that Maine students will continue to receive meals during the school day.
However, we know this does not address the need for food at home, on weekends, or during school breaks. Our groups remain committed to working with our community partners, the state legislature, and our federal delegation to find sustainable long-term solutions to support students and families and ensure they receive the support they need.
Here’s how all Mainers can help and where families can turn:
Support Your Local Food Pantry: Connect with your local pantry to learn what items are most needed or how you can volunteer. Many pantries are working overtime to meet increased demand. Use this link to find a pantry near you.
In-School Food Pantries and Backpack Programs: In communities across Maine, schools are a crucial social hub. Many schools have established food pantries or weekend backpack programs. Some educational associations also offer gift cards to families in support. If your school has any of these resources, help spread the word so families know these resources are available.
Schools Can Help Promote Other Community Resources: Local businesses, churches, and organizations often provide free meals, community suppers, and other support. Schools can play a vital role in making sure families are aware of these opportunities.
Let Us Know How You Are Supporting Your Communities: During this time of need, Maine’s educational organizations want to lift up and support the efforts of our local school districts – and share these approaches with other communities. Share the approach at your school by submitting your story at this link.
