Conducting the People’s Business: The Freedom of Access Act, Public Comment Periods, and Maine Schools

Maine schools have recently seen a spike in Freedom of Access Act information requests and in public participation at school board meetings. As public agencies, schools are obligated to be open and transparent about their operations and allow public engagement at their meetings. Complying with these obligations can be difficult, especially when doing so clashes with the need to protect staff or student confidentiality, or affects the operational capacity of the school.

At this conference, Drummond Woodsum experts will provide school board members and administrators with the tools that they need to navigate these difficult issues and ensure compliance with their legal responsibilities.

TOPICS WILL INCLUDE:

  • Maine’s Freedom of Access Act.

  • Determining what qualifies as a “public record”.

  • Best practices in responding to records requests.

  • Managing public comment periods.

  • Complying with the school’s First Amendment obligations.

  • And much more!

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This program is suggested primarily for school administrators and school board members.

Presented by:

Connor P. Schratz
Kathleen L. Wade
Justin B. Cary

Registration is $225 per person or $205 for each additional attendee from the same district  Conducting the People’s Business: The Freedom of Access Act, Public Comment Periods, and Maine Schools – SchoolLaw

School Board Day at the Statehouse

School Board members are encouraged to come to the State House on Tuesday, March 26, to meet with their legislators, visit the House and Senate, and show support for public education.

Board members are asked to gather at 9:30 on the second floor of the Cross Office building, which is the building to the right of the State House, and walk over together to the Legislature.

We will visit both the House and Senate chambers, where we will be recognized. There are many pieces of legislation dealing with education this session and School Board voices matter when these bills are discussed and ultimately voted upon.

If you are able to attend, please rsvp at msba@msmaweb.com.

Please come together on Tuesday, March 26, in Augusta to show your support for our schools.
