Planning now for board meetings with new legislators – September 1, 2016
MSMA will be sending out information in November to help school boards organize meetings with their newly elected senators and representatives to discuss issues facing schools in their district and the importance of public education.
Boards are encouraged to invite newly elected legislators to a School Board meeting as quickly as possible after Election Day to help establish that school board members and superintendents are the best resources for information on legislation affecting schools.
MSMA will provide handbooks giving lobbying tips to board members on the most effective way to advocate for schools once the Legislature begins its work in January.
There also will be a clinic offered at MSMA’s Annual Fall Conference to help boards prepare for their meeting with legislators and walk participants through the legislative and advocacy process. There will be tips on how and when to contact legislators on education bills and the importance of having a consistent message. A portion of the clinic will be a look ahead at what issues the 128th Legislature is likely to address in 2017.
This outreach will replace the September political forums with all candidates for office that were held two years ago.
MSMA’s 43rd Annual Fall Conference will be held Oct. 27 and 28 at the Augusta Civic Center. Details on the time and room for the legislative lobbying clinic will be in your program book.
