Middle School laptops still covered in state budget – January 10, 2017
There is funding for the Middle School laptop program in the governor’s proposed biennial budget, but a section of the law authorizing the payment of that money was removed because it was redundant with another section of law, according to the Department of Education.
MSMA’s overview on the biennial budget that went out on Jan. 9 said the funding had been eliminated based on a repeal of a section of law (Laptop program, 20-A §15689-A, number 8) in the governor’s budget. Suzan Beaudoin clarified this morning that the section of law eliminated was deemed redundant because another section of law (Learning through technology, 20-A §15689-A, number 12-A) adequately covers the program.
Beaudoin said the governor and DOE are committed to the laptop program through the 2019-2020 school year and are under contract for that period.
We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
