Legislature passes school funding bill – June 27, 2018
The Legislature Tuesday night passed a bill that allows $1 billion in General Purpose Aid to flow to schools for the new fiscal year that begins on July 1.
L.D. 1869, An Act To Establish the Total Cost of Education and the State and Local Contributions to Education for Fiscal Year 2018-19, authorizes the release of anticipated state funding and sets the minimum mill rate at 8.48, slightly lower than the predicted 8.51.
A second bill, L.D. 1666, that would make proficiency-based diplomas optional in school districts, passed both the House and Senate, but is being held in the Senate until the Legislature reconvenes on July 9.
July 9 also is the day when the Legislature will consider any new gubernatorial vetoes of bills passed to date.
