Beardsley officially nominated as DOE Commissioner
Governor Paul LePage today officially nominated Acting Education Commissioner William Beardsley to serve as commissioner pending approval by the Senate.
Beardsley, who was named acting commissioner in mid-October, will first go through an interview process with the State Board of Education and then go before the Legislature’s Education Committee. It, in turn, will make a recommendation on this nomination to the full Senate.
Beardsley is the former president of Husson University and previously served as Commissioner for the Maine Department of Conservation. He took over as acting commissioner of DOE when Tom Desjardin was named deputy commissioner. Desjardin’s term as acting commissioner had essentially expired under law.
The Senate will be back in session when the full Legislature returns to Augusta on Jan. 6.
